Tofukuji Temple is the head temple of the Rinzai Zen Tofukuji school, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. Formally known as Enichizan Tofukuzenji, it was founded in the 2nd year of Katei (1236) by Kujo Michiie, with Shakyamuni as the principal image. Renowned as one of Japan's greatest Zen temples with one of the country's largest temple complexes, it is famous for the fresh green maples and autumn foliage viewed from Tsutenkyo Bridge — one of Japan's most celebrated scenic spots. The Hojo "Honbo Garden" designed by Mirei Shigemori is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
